Generator Cart

We are in hurricane prone Florida, and most everyone owns a generator.  These are heavy and awkward to move.  Consequently, many don't exercise their generators monthly, and only discover their generator no longer works, during an outage.  By putting it on a cart, it's easy to roll outside, and run it for an hour each month.  I keep mine in the shed behind the house.  Now it can easily be towed where needed by hand, riding mower, or golf cart.  I didn't use CAD software, I just built the cart around the generator, adding pieces to do all the functions I wanted.

Obviously, you're not limited to using a cart like this for a Yamaha.  I also have a 7500 Watt Champion generator, and I'm making a cart for it too.  More on that one later.

I have a Lincoln Weld Pack 100 MIG welder.  Very basic machine, but ideal for this lightweight steel.

The tires are pneumatic, no worries of ever getting a flat.  They are mounted with 1/4-20 stainless hardware.

I added square plugs for each end of the box channel sections.  Dresses up the project.

The upright post makes a strong mount for the retractable power cord.

I bought these woodworking corner clamps at Harbor Freight.  They work well for squaring up sections.

I used a small Lincoln MIG welder to fuse the sections together.

The cart has cross pieces under the feet, leaving the underside of the generator completely exposed.  This makes oil changes easy as the drain plug is not obscured.

The handle is very basic.  Just a few pieces of 1" box channel, and a couple of pieces of cut angle aluminum to act as a hinge point.

Performing a monthly generator exercise.  I'm using a combination of two 500 Watt lights, and a heat gun, to fully load the generator.  Runs great, right from the cart.

Hurricane Irma thumped our location a few years ago.  I brought hardware, food, and supplies to my dad's house on the mainland.  Power went out, but wasn't an issue for us.  I ran my generator from the screened in patio.  I was able to run an 11K BTU A/C unit, a fridge, lights, fan, etc.
